Mormons in Pop Culture Part 1 Joseph Smith
LDS culture has woven it’s way into American entertainment more than a few times and I have decided it might be fun to make a series of posts focusing on popular LDS figures and themes as represented in the entertainment industry.
PART 1 THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH
JOSEPH SMITH HISTORY 1:33 “…God had a work for me to do; and that my name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues, or that it should be both good and evil spoken of among all people.”
This master of horror, played Joseph Smith in the 1940 film Brigham Young: Frontiersman.
Vincent Price as The Prophet Joseph Smith
Probably not the kindest representation with all the “dumb dumb dumbs” being sung in the background of all his scenes but here’s South Park’s Joseph Smith
In the 70’s a strange choice was made to have the guy named “Bull” from Night Court play Joseph Smith, probably not the best resemblance…
Family Guy also worked a random Joseph Smith scene into one of their cut-away gags (sorry for the quality)
Another Trey Parker and Matt Stone creation uses a fairly appropriate looking Joseph Smith for The Book of Mormon Musical…
There are probably others out there, however I avoided the explicitly anti-mormon crap that’s out there on purpose. If anyone finds anything else please share and I will update the post!
John 15:19 ” If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
